Slack Integration
The Slack integration lets you use the HaveAI assistant in your team's workspace. Once the necessary permissions and reply settings are complete, you can message the bot, mention it in channels it can access, or ask questions with supported commands.
The Slack setup requires creating a Slack app and connecting this app to HaveAI. The connection is authorized through Slack's permission screen; you do not need to enter your Slack password into HaveAI.
Before You Start
You need permission to add apps to the Slack workspace. If your workspace requires admin approval for app installation, complete this approval.
Keep the Slack section open in the HaveAI panel. You will get the addresses and settings you use during setup from this screen.
1. Create the Slack App
Open Slack app management and create a new app. Select the app's name and the workspace where it will be used.
2. Prepare Permissions and App Information
Go to the OAuth & Permissions section of your Slack app. Add the bot permissions shown in the setup step in the HaveAI panel. These permissions enable actions such as sending messages, receiving relevant messages, listing channels and using commands.
Save the following information from your Slack app into the relevant fields of the HaveAI panel:
- Client ID: The app ID.
- Client Secret: The app's secret key.
- Signing Secret: The secret key used to verify requests coming from Slack.
Use the secret keys only in the relevant setup fields; do not share them in channel messages.
3. Enter the Connection Addresses
Copy the addresses provided in the HaveAI panel to their counterparts in your Slack app:
- Event Subscriptions β Request URL: The address where Slack message and mention events reach HaveAI.
- Slash Commands β Request URL: The address where commands are sent.
- Interactivity β Request URL: The address provided for interactive actions.
- OAuth & Permissions β Redirect URLs: The return address used after authorization is complete.
In event subscriptions, add the app_mention, message.channels and message.im options the panel shows. Mentioning the bot and sending a direct message to the bot are different events; complete the setup for the communication forms you will use.
Get the addresses from your own panel
4. Connect the Workspace
Start the Slack connection in the HaveAI panel. On Slack's authorization screen, check the workspace and the requested permissions and approve.
When you return to HaveAI, check that the connected workspace is correct. Add the bot to the Slack channel where you will use it. The bot's access depends on the permissions you granted and the channels it is part of.
5. Try the Assistant
Make sure the setting to reply to messages with AI is on. Then try the methods you will use separately:
- Send a direct message to the bot.
- In a channel where the bot is present, mention the bot and ask a question.
- Send a question with one of the supported commands you set up.
The connection being established does not mean the option to reply to messages automatically is on.
Supported Commands
To use the commands, you also need to create them in the Slash Commands section of your Slack app and link them to the command address the panel provides.
| Command | Use |
|---|---|
/haveai your question | Sends a question to the assistant. |
/ask your question | An alternative command for sending a question to the assistant. |
/haveai-status | Gives information about the connected workspace and bot status. |
Example: /haveai What are our return terms?
The answer to the question command can be seen by other members in the channel where you used the command. When asking a question, consider the participants of the channel.
Channel and Notification Preferences
Review the default channel and notification preferences offered in the panel according to your team's working arrangement. Try the events you expect to receive notifications for with a sample action; having selected only one channel does not mean every kind of notification will come to that channel.
For conversation and human handoff tracking, use the Messages and Human Handoff sections in the HaveAI panel.
If No Answer Arrives
Check the connected workspace, whether the bot has been added to the channel, and the message reply setting. Then review the permissions, event subscriptions and connection addresses in the Slack app.
If a command does not work, check that the command name is correct and that it was created with the same name in the Slack app. If you changed permissions, Slack may request re-authorization.
If the message flow works but the answer content is insufficient, update your knowledge base and instructions in HaveAI.
Removing the Connection
You can remove the connection from the Slack section in the HaveAI panel. You can also check the app's access in the Slack workspace from Slack's app management.
For detailed app settings, use Slack's official setup guide; for conversation management, use the Messages and Human Handoff guides.
